Contempery Art (Q7)

An important concept in contemporary art is APPROPRIATION.
What do we mean by that?
Appropriation in the arts is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them.

Why is that so important?

The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of arts. The term appropriation refers to the use of borrowed elements in the creation of a new work or refers to the new work itself.

Why was this word not important for artists in the 20ieth century?

Despite the long and important history of appropriation, this artistic practice has recently resulted in contentious copyright issues which reflects more restrictive copyright legislation. so , in this society today, it is not siutable way to build the artwork. That will make the plagiarism mistake.

Chinese conteporay artist(Art III)

Today, i want to introduce my favourite Chinese temporary artist here---Ai Weiwei. He(born 18 May 1957) is a Chinese contemporary artist, active in sculpture, installation, architecture, curating, photography, film, and social, political and cultural criticism.

From 1981 to 1993, he lived in the United States, mostly in New York, creating conceptual art by altering readymade objects.[11] He studied at Parsons School of Design and at the Art Students League of New York.

Art 21

Last week, i pay some times check website art 21, i have some more new good ideas or impression of modern art. some art works give me really different feeling.
      1. Season 1 Laurie Anderson
     Talking pillow

Laurie Anderson’s artwork looked like a pillow but when you put your head to it you were able to listen to music. The pillow can have music because it is both comfortable and relaxing, the music can offer somewhat of a soothing aspect to the work of art. Laurie is a true musician and she uses music as her art. She literally is a music ARTIST. Everything about her music is complex has some type of art context to it.

     2. Season 2 Martin Puryear
   Box and pole

The sculpture consisted of a 4-and-a-half-foot square cube made of dovetailed beams and a 100 foot pole that was made from two trees. The wood that the sculpture is made from is supposed to contrast the abstractness of the sculpture. The box was made four feet so that the average person can look over it making them feel superior. However, the 100 foot pole towering over the box gives off an unreachable feeling.

3. Season 3. Cai guoqiang
The wolves

His spectacular art work "Head On," depicted 90 wolves suspended in an aerial arc of forward propulsion which abruptly collides with a glass wall.

4. Season 4. Pierre Huyghe
This is Not A Time for Dreaming

Pierre Huyghe uses billboards, TV, film and video to make work that borrows from everyday life and uses time and memory to investigate different stories and perceptions of reality.

5.Seanson 5. Jeff Koons
balloon dog

He is an American artist known for his reproductions of banal objects—such as Balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror finish surfaces. He lives and works in New York City and his hometown York, Pennsylvania.

6.  Season 6. Ai Weiwei

Sunflower Seeds

One ton of hand painted porcelain sunflower seeds from Ai Weiwei's installation Sunflower Seeds, in which one hundred million of these seeds created by 1,600 Chinese artisans were scattered over the floor of the Tat Modern London.

Reflection of AIC II

This week, we went to AIC twice. Actually, i think we need more times, so we can appreciate all the artworks there. For this time, we paid more attention on the visual sculptures, except a little videos and photos.
When we came in the museum, i was attracted by the some mini room model. And then i found their names, called "Thorne Miniature Rooms". I was so surprised that the model was made so well. They had perfect work on the detail, like the painting on the wall of the miniature rooms.

in this photo, you can zoom in the pattern of carpet, how beautiful it is!!!!

Shadow

The  shadow is the mysterious reaction of the refraction and reflection of light. Sometime, we can recognize some specific elements from the shadows. How tall, how slim, what is the pose...and so on. From these 2 pictures, i can get more detail. we can pay more attentions on the changing of shadow. The light around the shape of shadow is weakening gradually. Actually, they seem to be consisted with too many different shadows. Compared with the second picture, it is much brighter, and the outline is more clear.

Artist II: film Michelangelo---The Agony and the Ecstasy

The Agony and The Ecstasy was directed by Carol Reed, a British director of some stature, knighted in 1952. In this moive, it just said the whole processing that Michelangelo making the wall painting of Sistine Church, in Italy. The Sistine Chapel ceiling, is a painting by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, at the commission of Pope Julius II.

The film shows the extraordinary violent temper of the Pope, his lost of his self-control and his rude behavior towards the Florentine when he shouts: 'He will paint it or he will hang!' But, in one scene, he explains to Michelangelo his reasons: 'If I had not become a conqueror, there would be no church, no pontiff, no hope for peace for mankind and, I might add, no patrons for sculpture, painting, and architecture.'
The Agony and the Ecstasy" is a proof of faith and a battle of wills... The pope continually asks Michelangelo: 'When you will make an end of it?' and the answer of Buonarotti is invariably the same: 'When I'm finished!'

Actually, the great famous artist is not the one who has already made too many beautiful works, but the spirit of his whole life. The insisting of his dream made me moved.

Refletion AIC class visit

The Art Institute of Chicago is an amazing place, because everything inside is associated with art. From the design of the building to the presence of famous artworks, AIC strikes my heart and soul.
My first impression of AIC is gorgeous. Not only the material of the building is fancy, but the computers in the front desk are expensive. I don’t know whether the fancy material or high-tech computers have anything to do with art, but I am sure every visitor can feel comfortable inside the institute. When we step into the first room of Van Gogh’s paintings, I am excited to see so many original versions of paintings. The differences between the original artworks and the photos of artwork in the textbook are obvious. From the textbook, I only can look at the artworks in one fixed angle and direction, whereas here I can view the artworks from different directions. I can tell how the artists construct their paintings, how the figures arrange, and how the paintings look like from different angles. By analyzing the artworks in this deep ways, I have a better understanding of the artworks.
After seeing the fantastic paintings, we have to analyze one artwork in groups. For the presentation, I didn’t do a great job in working with my partner. The reason is that we both are crazy about the artworks in the building so that we go on our tour separately. However, we did great in expressing our feelings about the chosen artwork, and I liked the collaboration very much.
The only setback of this tour is the limiting time. I don’t have enough time to enjoy the amazing artworks, not to mention to take pictures. I am hoping that we can visit AIC for more time.

A I C website

I went to the AIC website. the artworks are amzoning. i want to go there if i have time. Firstly, i like the lions in front of AIC. they look very alive to protect the whole buiding. And then, some collections racall my memoty of my childhood.

loop art

The loop art is a guided walking tour of Chicago's impressive collection of public art in the Loop, Actually, i have seen most of art works in Chicago. however, when i get more information about the loop arts, i was attracted by them.
Couple days ago, we took a boat trip , and i reflected that the buildings beside the lake were like the moving exhibition about the architecture in Chicago. But, after the art loop trip, i felt soooooo proud of Chicago. It is famous as industry and population, but i think the art and culture rank in the top of the world also.

i saw this Crown Fountain in the American drama: the prison break

i like the lions in front of the gates. but i didnot take the pictures of them , because my time was limited.

my pose

This is my favorite art work: the bowaman and spearman. i am not interested how nice these look. do you find there are no weapons in hands of these two warriors.

To my frank, when i stand in front of this figure, i didnt know what it looked like. maybe it is a horse.

the color jam is a programs of professor Jessica in university of Chicago. She want to break the old rule and give the surprising to the walker.

Boat Ride

Last week, we went to lake and took a tour about the building by boat. This is my third time to take a boat on the same lake (previous two times: water taxi). The first feeling on the boat was cold. It was not supposed to be cold like that. Maybe just there is few sunshine shooting to the narrow lake path.
The boat trip is like exhibition of the history of building in Chicago, although it is outside. But, various periodic building is showing on the lake shores, making us know a lot about the developing of building in Chicago.

we will start to go...

For the glass building, chicago had a lot on the 19th century.

We can just check the color of lake. it is dark brown, because the whole chicago sends the waste water to this lake.

You can check the color of water right now. it is green, because these water are from Michigan lake.

The whole view of high skescrapers in Chicago.

Although i have been in Chicago for just 3years, we feel pround of this city. It has long long history and lots of modern or fashional symbols also
